There is an emerging public health crisis in Cork after the local council confirmed that thousands of homes will be without running water until next weekend at the earliest.
It follows severe damage to one of the city's major water treatment plants in yesterday's floods.
HSE officials have expressed concern at a lack of proper sanitation, particularly as many people won't have access to hot water to wash their hands, a vital defence against swine flu.

President Jacob Zuma on Saturday called for an urgent end to water contamination, saying that spillage of sewerage into South Africa's water supplies would lead to water undrinkable.
"We must deal with the spillage of sewerage into our water supplies and other forms of contamination. If we don't deal with it urgently, our water will end up undrinkable because of the high levels of contamination," Zuma said.

There is one meter left to install in the village of Chatsworth and about eight in Walter's Falls.
There are 230 water users in the village of Chatsworth who now pay $642 per year for their water, no matter how much they use.

The city of Muskegon's new monthly utility billing system could bring users a slight savings if they join online billing programs.
With sewer rates scheduled to jump 25 percent in 2010, the city has decided to institute a monthly sewer and water billing system instead of the current quarterly system.
Bill payers had asked for a monthly system to help with household budgeting as the overall utility bill rises, city officials said.

Aqua Pennsylvania Inc. officials announced Friday that the company is filing a request with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission to increase its water rates beginning Jan. 18.
Aqua is requesting an overall rate increase of $43.2 million per year, according to company officials.

A tough approach is helping the Weissport Municipal Authority keep current with its bills to Central Carbon Municipal Authority, and the board is not planning to back off anytime soon.
In a meeting Wednesday night, members discussed shutting off two more residential water supplies and holding a constable sale.
There are 12 more water shut-offs pending.

Users of the Pottstown water system are facing a rate hike of nearly 7 percent as part of the budget now under consideration by the Pottstown Borough Authority.
Additionally, a 30.5 percent increase to the base rate — what you would pay if you used no water at all — has also been proposed.
But before you pick you the phone to call borough hall, know that the percentages can be misleading.
